Every Wednesday morning at 4:15 AM our alarms go off. We usually hit the snooze once then struggle out of bed. Fifteen minutes later, coffee in hand, we head out the door to the YMCA. We get checked in, grab a pickleball set and head to the courts to meet our Pickleball Peeps.
What started out as a “try and see who comes” has turned into “how many nets do we need today?” On a typical Wednesday we have 10-15 bright-eyed and bushy tailed peeps show up. We get the nets set up, pick our partners and get started. The scoring of Pickleball is a little complicated to learn but with us being on the “seasoned” side of life, even remembering who is serving can be a challenge. We tried to solve the “problem” of remembering who is serving by inviting some younger peeps to join us. We’ll teach them to play, keep the score and keep track of who is serving was the thought. That worked beautifully until we found out how quick and athletic they are.

We really do have a great group of peeps and we’re adding new people all the time. So much so that we added a new day, Friday, to our 5:00 AM gathering. We will accept anyone who wants to get up early and join the peeps – all we ask is that you come to have fun. We’re competitive each point and each game but we enjoy congratulating each other when you make great shots or making fun of yourself if you miss a ball or hit a “home run”. It’s a great way to get a cardio workout, but most of all, we get to make new friends and get to spend an hour getting to know the other early morning Pickleball Peeps.
